During the 18th and 19th century, Barth saw a period of glory through the development of sail navigation. At times, there were several shipyards and shipping lines whose ships sailed the seven seas.
The city port is being redesigned at the moment. The harbour basin, the quay and the promenade have been completed and invite you to go for a stroll. A number of office blocks and residential buildings are being constructed in order to create a lively harbour atmosphere. There are ideal berth facilities for sports boats and yachts. The new hotel named "Speicher" (storehouse), with its fantastic view of the Bodden and the town (see web cam), has been created from a former grain silo.
The Barth Sailing and Port Days are the highlight of the summer. National and international sailing competitions are the centre of attention during this week. One of the highlights is a theatre event that is performed on the Barth Bodden Stage, which is a floating stage in the city port.
